Studiował na Uniwersytecie w Chicago
i w Juillard School (najsłynniejsza szkoła w Nowym Jorku). Debiut - muzyka do filmu
"Koyaanisqatsi" (1983). Na swoim koncie ma nominacje do Oscara i Golden Globe za muzykę
do obrazu Martina Scoresesa - "Kundun". Jest także zdobywcą Złotego Globu za kompozycję do
"The Truman Show".
